"Before we begin, I want you to name three languages that you know of ... you don't have to know how to speak that language? You probably missed one ... Programming and Coding - it is the way of the future and it will soon be considered another language. Not only is it used for games, like the ones we created, but also for education resources like Google," says Casey Cooke, grade 5 coder.
On Tuesday March 27th, St Kateri Tekakwitha CES hosted their first annual Coding Club Carnival. This was an opportunity for our students (grades 4-8) who participated in a six week, lunch hour coding club with our Community Partner - IEC (Industry-Education Council - www.iechamilton.ca), to showcase their end products and creations. The students demonstrated and shared their self-created apps and games. We are grateful for the participation of our guests which included: Mr. Dave Hansen (Director), Mr. Baiardo (Trustee), Mrs. Pizzutti (Superintendent), Mrs. Scime (Assistant Superintendent), Mr. Tabone (Assistant Superintendent), Mrs. Gibson (IEC), Mrs. Clarke (IEC), Fr Joe and Parish Staff, as well as many members of our Catholic School Council and Parent Community.
The students were very enthusiastic and motivated to share both their successes and failures. Our students involved in SKT's Coding club have demonstrated great learning and problem solving skills throughout these last two months. We are very appreciative of all our students’ hard work and efforts. Our students have demonstrated both their 21st Century Learning Skills Competencies and Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations during this learning experience. We are also grateful for the community partnership with IEC (Industry Education Council of Hamilton) and our mentor Miss Elizabeth Trang.
We look forward to our next steps and bringing Coding to all our staff and students within St Kateri Tekakwitha and outside in our community as well.
