Fire Prevention Week 2020

Did you know that cooking is the number #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries? Unattended fires is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!™, works to educate everyone about fire prevention and safety.
Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871, caused when a cow tipped over a candle. The fire, which burned for two days and nights, killed more than 250 people, left over 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.

Proclaimed in 1925, Fire Prevention Week provides lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires.

In mark the week, Hamilton Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Division has prepared a number of resources to educate students in grades 3, 4 and 5 about the simple but important actions we can take to keep us safe in the kitchen.

There’s also a Sesame Street-themed colour and learn activity book for students, Kindergarten to Grade 2, which features fire safety songs, lyrics, stories and important messages on what to do in an emergency and things that we can all do to stay safe.
